What are the benefits of Pilates for the older adults?
- Increase overall strength and flexibility
- Improve balance and coordination
- Reduce risks of falling
- Improve posture
- Engage the mind and enhance body awareness
- Gentler on the joints
- Safe way to rehab from injuries
As we get older, we can lose some of our balance and coordination. One in three people over the age of 60 experience a fall every year. For the older population keeping fit and mobile is essential. However, many forms of exercise can be hard on the bodies of older adults and make them more susceptible to injuries.
Pilates Bodyworks South Yarra has over 10 years experience working with older clients towards their fitness and health goals in a safe way. Our classes are specifically designed to help the older adults increase strength and flexibility in their core and legs, which positively affects their balance. We focus on controlled breathing and quality of movement. Form and technique are key elements in our teaching. We start with teaching control and stability in a small range of motion. The exercises are gentler on the joints as compared to other forms of exercises. As the older adult gains more control and confidence, the exercises progress to a larger range of motion.
Our classes also cater for people suffering from a range of problems including arthritis, osteoporosis, spinal issues, sciatica, diabetes, tendinopathies, etc..
